My, oh my, what a month it has been! Since the end of February I have driven to New York three times (three weeks in a row) and North Carolina once. I drove 1600 miles (that's almost from New Market to Denver, CO) in five days and traveled across 17 state lines (not 17 different ones though). I attended three job interviews and one wedding. Andrew came and visited for a full week, and I have worked a bunch of hours. Unfortunately, I have baked no cupcakes.
Yes, it has been a busy month, and for that reason, I have failed in blogging regularly. Here's a bulleted list of important events:
- I did not get the job I first interviewed for. Even though I was perfectly suited for it (I worked for the company before!) and it was my dream job.
- My cousin's wedding was beautiful, held in a barn and had just the cutest little details. It was also nice to see a lot of my family, most of whom I hadn't seen since my other cousin's wedding two and a half years ago. I wore a new dress (I've sort of been on a dress-buying spree lately--there are so many cute ones out this spring!) that was gray with hot pink slingbacks.
- Andrew visited and, even though I had to work more than I have in the past three weeks combined, we had a great time. We saw a movie (Hall Pass--skip it), spent a gorgeous, 77 degree day reading in the park and went out for St. Patrick's Day with Michael and Emily.
- On St. Patrick's Day, Andrew lost a bet to Michael and got slapped in the face.
That's pretty much all of the important stuff. I also finished Lolita and Animal Farm. I did not "like" either. Lolita is pretty much about a pedophile--a man who has always had a thing for "nymphets" or alluring girls between the ages of 10 and 14, who falls in love with Dolores/Lolita (I don't know why she has two names), marries her mother, who is then serendipitously killed, takes custody of Lolita and then spends two years driving around the country sleeping with her. Eventually Lolita runs away, and he takes two more years to find her. When he does, she is married and pregnant, so he gives her some cash and leaves it at that.
I'm not really sure what to make of it. I know its at least partially a commentary on love, but I don't know if it's about the obsessive nature of love, or the line between love and lust, or the rules our society places on love or what. Maybe I'll SparkNotes it and see what they say.
I also finished Animal Farm. It was blessedly short. I liked George Orwell's other great masterpiece, 1984, but this one fell short. I know it's one long allegory, but come on, pigs will never learn to talk, read or write with chalk held in their hooves. I know the talking pigs stand for fascism and all that jazz, but it was annoying. Also, there were absolutely no surprises in the story--it may have been ahead of its time, but I could have predicted the entire story. I know that's more a result of my experience with other works that came after it, rather than the trite nature of Animal Farm but I'm less concerned about writing facts and more concerned with writing opinions--mine, of course.
I am now reading A Room With a View, but haven't gotten very far because since I started reading it, all of the above things have occurred. But its due back at the library this week, so I better get a move on.
I laughed out loud when I read "Unfortunately I haven't baked any cupcakes."
ReplyDeleteIts kind of sad but I checked this blog a couple times when I was at your house and you were at work. You were spending ALL of your free time with me, so how could you have possibly posted a blog?!
Thanks Book Worm for FINALLY updating your blog! I have been checking and hoping for updates for weeks but have been let down so many times :( I was happy to see that my bet with Andrew made the list of important events though! I made a similar bet with John the next day. In fact I made two of them with him and won both! I transferred half of my winnings to Emily so John got a hand across the face from all of Em&M! Anyhow, looking forward to future updates.
ReplyDeleteSincerely,
Slap Master Mike
Dude you'll get what's coming to you...
ReplyDeleteI am with Mike I check your blog often and was so excited to see a new post. Not certain I would have liked that book Lolita either. On a side note, remind me never to bet with Mike. It sounds too painful! Lol
ReplyDeleteAndrew, I believe it was YOU who got what was coming to you! Need I remind you of what you said right before I slapped you???
ReplyDeletePS I hope Bridget doesn't mind us turning her blog into a forum for our trash talking...
Wow, thanks all for being such dedicated followers. It is much appreciated. And of course I don't mind. I've never been one to discourage trash talking. If I remember correctly, AJ once asked me to teach him how to do it...
ReplyDeleteAnd Mike, I find it hilarious you've dubbed yourself "Slap Master." It has a nice ring to it.
Its not so much that I have dubbed myself "Slap Master", its more that based on the events of last week it just makes logical sense. I am just accepting the name that the circumstances have bestowed upon me. Just watch the video from St Patty's day again and you will agree that there is no other name that fits.... Its logic!
